Al Adan Hospital Expansion
Mubarak Al-Kabeer, Kuwait
The Expansion of the Al Adan Hospital provides a new Maternity and Pediatrics healthcare facilities, initiated by the Ministry of Health as part of the Kuwait National Healthcare Development Plan. Totaling of 220,000 m2, the new hospital building will provide 632 beds over 14 floors. An additional 280,000 m2 of support facilities include: General Surgical unit, Same Day Surgery, Nutrition and Dietetics, Adult and Pediatrics Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation unit, Hospital Administration and Multistory Car parks. The main hospital has a clinical podium housing a large entrance atrium, clinics and acute services with three upper ward towers providing identity and scale to the development. Despite its size, the building has a unique and “playful” quality generated through the interplay of soft undulating ribbons on the façades in the form of fixed sun screens. These screens wrap the podium exterior appearing to fold in and out of the glass façade enhancing patient privacy and providing shade from the sun’s glare where required. The upper ward towers are wrapped with horizontal light shelves which help to reduce natural light transmission whilst also framing views to the exterior for patients of all ages. The podium includes a ‘winter garden’ designed for patient and guests to use as a recreational play zone and relaxation space.
